CAN ONT GVT Working For Workers Six


On Nov. 27, CAN ONT GVT introduced sixth bill on worker wellbeing.


  • CAN ONT GVT introduced Bill 229, the Working for Workers Six Act, 2024, which builds on previous five Working for Worker acts to protect health and wellbeing of workers.
  • Follows CAN ONT PRL Oct. 2024 bill on posting, sick note, remote work, see #231574.
  • Rule Amendments
  • Measure would amend Employment standards act 2000 (CAN ONT S.O. 2000 c. 41).
  • Additionally, the Occupational health and safety act (CAN ONT R.S.O. 1990 c. O.1).

  • Bill Provisions
  • The bill further supports workplace safety by cracking down on bad actor employers.
  • Mandates mandatory minimum fines of $500,000 for corporations convicted of repeated offences within a 2-year period under the Occupational health and safety act.
  • Establishes a new parental leave policy for parents through adoption and surrogacy.
  • Creates a new 27-week job-protected long-term illness leave for workers with a serious medical condition which would be one of longest provincial leaves in Canada.
  • Requires properly-fitting PPE for women to encourage more women into the trades.
  • Improves cancer coverage for firefighters, investigators, and volunteers by removing requirement that primary-site colorectal diagnosis must be made before the age of 61.
  • Lowers required duration of service for primary-site kidney cancer from 20 to 10 years.
  • Rebates WSIB surpluses to safe employers, reducing business premium rates.
  • Cracks down on bad actors that exploit newcomers and harm workers by introducing new standards, fines, and lifetime bans for fraudulent immigration representatives.
