Overview
Parents of children born prematurely or those who require a longer hospital stay will be able to extend their leave by 8 to 15 weeks.
On Oct. 29, 2024, Council of Ministers decided to introduce additional maternity leave.
Also decided to increase budget deficit without affecting state spending and extended deadline to implement deposit system linked to waste related upcoming regulations.
After meeting, Prime Minister Tusk also announced presentation of the first substantive report of the Commission for the Study of Russian and Belarusian Influence (details).
Key Aspects
Supplementary maternity leave is solution adopted by the government that will allow parents to extend their break from work in the event of a premature birth.
Option also available to caregivers of newborns who require longer hospital stay after birth; parents of premature born will be able to extend their leave from 8 to 15 weeks, depending on the date of birth and the child's health needs.
Budget deficit increased from PLN 184 billion to PLN 240.3 billion but this that does not mean cutting expenditure, which has remained at the current level.
Forecast for budget act prepared by previous government for 2024 included inflation at 6.6%, while data to date indicate decrease to 3.7%.

Nov. 2024 Update
On Nov. 27, 2024, POL FSP announced Sejm passed law for extra maternity leave.
Leave for parents of children born prematurely and those who had to stay in hospital longer after birth due to their health condition; up to 15 weeks of additional leave.
Act introduces additional maternity leave of up to 8 weeks or 15 weeks depending on period of hospitalization and week of pregnancy in which child is born, or birth weight.
For parents of children born before completion of week 28 or with a birth weight up to 1000g. additional maternity leave of up to 15 weeks after birth.
For parents of child born after week 28 but before week 36 and with birth weight of over 1000 g, leave will be able to last up to 8 weeks.
For parents whose child was born after week 37 and will require hospitalization from 5th day after delivery to 8th week after delivery the leave will be up to 8 weeks.
In latter case, the condition is that after delivery child's stay in hospital is at least 2 consecutive days in period from 5th to 28th day after delivery.
In the previous cases, rule of one week's leave for one week in hospital will apply.
Benefit for period of additional maternity leave will amount to 100% of benefit base.
Act to enter into force 3 months after publication; first estimates assume a 12 months period is needed for Social Insurance Institution to implement changes.
Dec. 2024 Law Signed
On Dec. 16, 2024, POL FSP said the bill was signed by the President on Dec. 12, 2024.
The Act is to enter into force 3 months after the date of announcement; this is the minimum period needed for the Social Insurance Institution to implement the changes.
Application for additional maternity leave can be submitted to the employer with a medical certificate; leave is available also to legal guardians, foster, adoptive parents.
