US IRS offered filing, payment relief to victims in parts of Illinois due to severe storms, tornadoes beginning Jul. 13; see #224371; deadlines postponed to Feb. 3, 2025.
Eligibility
US IRS is offering relief to affected taxpayers in any area designated by FEMA.
Currently, Cook, Fulton, Henry, St. Clair, Washington, Will, Winnebago counties.
Individuals, households that reside/have business in these localities qualify for relief.
The same relief will be available to any other counties added later to the disaster area.
US IRS automatically provides filing, penalty relief to any taxpayer with IRS address of record located in disaster area; taxpayers do not need to contact agency to get relief.
May also provide relief for certain taxpayers who live outside disaster area.
Relief Offered
The tax relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred beginning on July 13, 2024, and ending on Feb. 3, 2025 (postponement period).
As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until Feb. 3, 2025, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.
Includes valid extensions on 2024 return, quarterly estimate payments for Sep. and Jan, quarterly payroll and excise returns normally due in Jul. Oct. and Jan.
May choose to claim on return for year loss occurred (i.e., 2024 return normally filed next year), or the return for the prior year (the 2023 return filed this year).
Taxpayers have extra time to make the election; up to 6 months after due date of taxpayer’s federal income tax return for disaster year (without regard to extension).
