On Aug. 20, NY LEG and NYDFS support Long Island due to weather.
NY LEG and NYDFS reported on support to communities in Long Island that were impacted by severe weather, heavy rain that occurred on Aug. 18 and Aug. 19, 2024.
NY State’s Weather Risk Communication Center reported that Mesonet's Stony Brook site in Suffolk County recorded 9.4 inches of rain, and have conducted initial surveys.
Assistance to Impacted Areas
The homeowners and businesses in Nassau and Suffolk counties are encouraged to fill out an online form in order to self-report damages to their homes and/or businesses.
The data on the form will help State and local officials identify supplemental damages.
To develop and augment potential requests for available federal assistance programs.
After contacting insurance companies, residents can get help with insurance data re policy coverage for losses, guidance on documenting losses and safeguarding property.
New Yorkers who have been impacted by flooding should visit DFS Disaster and Flood Recovery Resource Center, can get help to ensure claims are processed promptly.
Includes information on how to file complaint if policyholders cannot resolve disputes.
Homeowners who experienced property losses urged to file claims with insurer as soon as possible after losses occur, and document damages with photos and/or videos.
They should also cooperate with their insurers and record conversations with insurance representatives, noting the representatives' names, times and dates of calls or visits.
Should give insurer detailed room-by-room inventory of damaged items and property.
Also reminded homeowners that flood damage is only covered through flood insurance.
Aug. 23, 2024 NY LEG, NYDFS Disaster Declaration
On Aug. 23, 2024, NY LEG and NYDFS reported executive order 39 signed, declaring an emergency in Suffolk County due to record rainfall on Aug. 18 and Aug. 19, 2024.
Governor Hochul also announced that she will submit a request for federal emergency declaration from the president to support response, recovery operations in the county.
Would authorize FEMA to provide reimbursement for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and actions to eliminate/reduce more damage to infrastructure.
Governor also directed organizations to launch an emergency repair program for homeowners in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a Statewide damage assessment.
Under New York Homes and Community Renewal, homeowners may be eligible for up to $50k in grants to fund or reimburse certain qualifying health and safety repairs.
Addresses damage that are not covered by insurance or disaster relief programs.
Applicants must be homeowners who occupy the home as a primary residence and total household income may not exceed 150 percent of the area median income.
NYDFS will be deployed on Aug. 27, 28 to a resource center in affected communities.

Sep. 2024 NY LEG Declaration Extension
On Sep. 20, 2024, NY LEG issued EO 39.1 to extend disaster emergency in Suffolk County and continued terms, conditions, suspensions in EO 39 until Oct. 20, 2024.
