US IRS Hurricane Debby Tax Relief


On Aug. 9, US IRS issued Hurricane Debby relief for SC, NC, FLA, GA.


  • US IRS issued tax relief for individuals and businesses impacted by Hurricane Debby.
  • Relief allows affected taxpayers until Feb. 3, 2025 to file tax returns, make payments.
  • Eligibility
  • Relief available for FEMA-designated areas in four States, applies to all South Carolina counties, 61 Florida counties, 55 counties in Georgia, 66 counties in North Carolina.
  • Postpones tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred on Aug. 1, 2024, in Florida, Aug. 4, 2024, in Georgia and South Carolina, and Aug. 5, 2024, in North Carolina.
  • Applies to individual, business or tax-exempt entities with a valid extension to file their 2023 return, quarterly estimated tax payments due on Sept. 16, 2024, Jan. 15, 2025.
  • Also quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due on Oct. 31, 2024, and Jan. 31, 2025.
  • Penalties will be abated for payroll/excise tax deposits once timely deposits are made.
  • IRS provides filing and penalty relief to taxpayer with an IRS address of record in the disaster area, taxpayers should call IRS if they moved into the area after last return.
  • Additional Relief
  • Individuals and businesses in a disaster area who suffered uninsured or unreimbursed disaster-related losses can claim either on the year of the loss or the prior year.
  • Taxpayers have up to six months after the due date of the income tax return for the disaster year to make the election, for individual taxpayers, that is Oct. 15, 2025.
  • Should use FEMA 3605-EM for Florida, FEMA 3606-EM for South Carolina, FEMA 3607-EM for Georgia and FEMA 3608-EM for North Carolina, on any return claiming a loss.
  • Taxpayer may be eligible to take a special disaster distribution, without the additional 10% early distribution tax, taxpayer may be able to spread the income over 3 years.
  • Aug. 13, 2024 US IRS Vermont Relief
  • On Aug. 13, 2024, US IRS expanded relief for Hurricane Debby to all of Vermont.
  • Affected taxpayers have until Feb. 3, 2025, to file federal individual, business returns.
