On Sep. 23, NGR SEC issued IFRS S1 & S2 implementation roadmap.

  • NGR SEC issued a circular on the adoption and implementation of the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards.
  • Follows ISSB Jun. 2023 issued inaugural general and climate standards, #177221.

  • Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) developed a Roadmap for the Adoption of IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards in Nigeria.
  • Roadmap sets out a phased transition with early voluntary adoption before 2024, followed by voluntary adoption until 2027.
  • Implementation Preparation
  • Listed companies and significant capital market institutions must prepare and submit their implementation plans to NGR SEC by Oct. 15, 2026.
  • Plans must outline governance structures, gap analysis, implementation planning, internal control and assurance mechanisms, any expected challenges.
  • Establish capacity building and training arrangements.
  • Indicate the year when the entity expects to commence sustainability reporting.
  • Effectiveness
  • Mandatory adoption for public interest entities, including all listed companies and significant capital market institutions, starts from Jan. 1, 2028.
  • Small and medium-sized entities must start preparing the disclosures from Jan. 1, 2030.
