FEMA Funding for Gwen Fire in Idaho

  • FEMA reported it authorized the use of federal funds to fight Gwen Fire burning in the Nez Perce Reservation and in Nez Perce and Latah counties in State of Idaho.

  • Eligibility
  • Approval based on likelihood Gwen Fire threatened to constitute a major disaster.
  • At the time of the request, the fire threatened homes in and around the communities of Juliaetta, Myrtle, Arrow Junction and Lenore and the city of Lapwai.
  • The fire also threatened private and nonprofit public utilities and critical community infrastructure such as roads, bridges, public businesses and recreational areas.
  • FMAGs
  • Grants are provided through the President's Disaster Relief Fund and are made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster.
  • Eligible items include field camps; equipment use, repair, and replacement; mobilization and demobilization activities; and tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Makes FEMA funding available to pay 75% of State’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating, and controlling the designated fires.
  • These grants do not provide assistance to individual home or business owners.
  • Nor do they cover other infrastructure damage that has been caused by the fire.
  • Hazard Mitigation Grant
  • Another $985,111 will be available to Idaho through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) post fire for the mitigation of future wildfires and related hazards.
  • Eligible projects include defensible space measures and ignition-resistant construction.
  • Nov. 2024 SBA Disaster Loans
  • On Nov. 22, 2024, SBA made federal disaster loans available to Idaho businesses and residents affected by the Gwen Fire, that occurred Jul. 24-Aug. 9, 2024.
  • Businesses of all sizes, private nonprofits may borrow up to $2mn to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, other assets.
  • For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, most private nonprofits, SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans.
  • Economic Injury Disaster Loans help meet working capital needs caused by disaster.
  • Deadline for property damage is Jan. 21, 2025; deadline for EIDLS is Aug. 22, 2025.
