CAL LEG Wildfire Survivor Eviction Ban

Published on: Jan 22, 2025

On Jan. 17, CAL LEG issued executive order banning evictions for fires.

  • CAL LEG governor Newsom issued executive order (EO) to expand eviction protections for tenants, who provide shelter to survivors of Los Angeles-area firestorms.
  • Also CAL AG Bonta issued statement regarding the EO expressing his commitment.
  • Executive Order
  • Prohibits landlords from using unlawful detainer process to evict a tenant for violating term of lease that would otherwise prohibit them from sheltering from emergency.
  • Order does not prohibit landlords from enforcing other lease terms, such as criminal activity or property damage; interim solution to provide immediate relief for survivors.
  • CAL AG issued a statement in support of the executive order banning evictions.
  • Effectiveness
  • The order is in effect until Mar. 8, 2025.
