US Census Integrate Economic Surveys

On Mar. 18, US Census launched integrated economic survey, blog.

  • US Census launched the Annual integrated economic survey (AIES) for 2023.
  • Survey to provide key measures of economic activity, including the only comprehensive national and subnational data on business revenues, expenses and assets.
  • Overview
  • AEIS is comprised of seven legacy surveys combined into one overarching survey.
  • Asks businesses to report their annual information only once a year, eliminating duplicate requests, harmonizing data content, and reducing respondents' burden.
  • Incorporated respondent’s requests to use spreadsheets to report more detailed data.
  • AIES is first survey to use Data Ingest and Collection for the Enterprise (DICE) platform, allowing flexibility in survey content and incorporating nontraditional data.
  • By using Bureau’s new platforms, AIES will take advantage of most up-to-date technology to greatly improve the flow of data from collection to dissemination.
  • Consolidated Surveys
  • AIES combined content from 7 current surveys, Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES); Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS); Annual Survey of Manufacturers (ASM).
  • As well as Annual Wholesale Trade Survey (AWTS); Manufacturers’ Unfilled Orders Survey (M3UFO); Service Annual Survey (SAS); and Report of Organization (COS).
  • AIES Launch
  • On Mar. 18, 2024, US Census launched its AIES survey to about 370,000 businesses.
  • Responses to 2023 AIES due Apr. 30, 2024; first annual data release in summer 2025.
