Forest SC announced that Italy adopted a revised forest management standard.
Document date Aug. 20, 2024, received from Forest SC Aug. 21, summarized Aug. 23.
Background
Forests throughout Italy have expanded in recent years, but expansion has been driven by land being abandoned rather than through planned management.
This has resulted in decline in timber harvesting and led to rising amount of imports.
Along with growing public interest in the many benefits of well-managed forests, these changes called for revision of Forest Stewardship Standard for Italy, adopted in 2017.
Revisions
Updates to standard address forest management, high conservation values, the customary rights of local communities, amendments of relevant national legislation.
Specific management recommendations for cork oak forests, poplar plantations, agro-forestry systems and non-timber forest products, high-altitude forest indicators.
Along with a guide for identification and protection of high conservation value areas.
Effectiveness
The revised forest stewardship standard comes into force on Dec. 1, 2024.
