FINRA API Multi-Factor Authentication


On Nov. 6, FINRA issued update on API access using multi factor.


  • FINRA published technical notice requiring multi factor authentication (MFA) for access to all production API reference data files with a test period extending to Jan. 10, 2025.
  • Highlights
  • Beginning on Jan. 13, 2025, FINRA will no longer support the use of digital certificates to access the Reference data API and clients must have converted to MFA by this date.
  • Failure to use MFA starting on Jan. 13, 2025 will prevent access to any API reference data files users will not be able to download security master files, security list updates.
  • To access the API via MFA, users will need to have an assigned username and password, answer security questions and enroll in additional authentication methods.
  • Dec. 2024 FINRA Reminder
  • On Dec. 9, 2024, FINRA issued reminder on MFA requirement to access data files.
  • Beginning on Jan. 13, 2025, FINRA will no longer support the use of digital certificates to access the Reference data API and only MFA access will be supported.
  • Discontinued use of digital certificates to access reference data API after close of business on Jan. 10, 2025; FINRA will not extend date of transition past Jan. 13, 2025.
