NJ LEG Consumer Data Protection


On Jan. 16, NJ LEG enacted bill to protect use of consumer data.


  • NJ LEG approved bills AB 1971, SB 332 on protecting consumer data by requiring notification to consumers of collection, disclosure of personal data by certain entities.
  • Bill Provisions
  • Requires an operator that collects consumer data through its site for the purpose of selling the consumer’s information to post a link clearly and conspicuously on its site.
  • Or in another accessible location that allows consumers to opt-out of data collection.
  • Consumers must know what data is held by operator; with ability to correct, delete.
  • Operator must limit collection of personal data to what is adequate, relevant, and reasonably necessary to their business, must specify purpose of personal data.
