On Dec. 18, CAN CMP issued changes to modernize Competition Act.
CAN CMP reported that amendments to modernize Competition Act (CAN RSC 1985 c. C-34) received royal assent, strengthening CAN CMP's ability to promote competition.

Competition Act
Changes created a framework for market studies with information gathering powers.
Repeal efficiencies defense for anti-competitive mergers and business collaborations.
Changes simplified test for abuse of dominance and increase the maximum penalties.
Also expanded scope of law to restrict more anti-competitive business collaborations.
Effectiveness
Amendments to modernize the Competition Act will be effective immediately.
Changes re anti-competitive business collaborations will be effective Dec. 15, 2024.
