DEN DIG announced old unsecure version of MitID app is being phased out soon.
Old version not containing security improvements will be shut down on May 28, 2024.
Follows DEN DIG Feb. 2024 announced update to activate MitID app, see #201698.
Overview
New updates to MitID app are issued at regular intervals, which are continuously improved with new security measures, bug fixes and functionalities.
E.g. important, recent update is QR code scanning if you authorize with MitID on the computer, which was introduced in Jun. 2023 to reduce the risk of fraud.
These important security improvements not included in the old version of MitID app.
The vast majority of MitID users already use latest version of the MitID app with latest security measures bug fixes and functionalities, will not be affected by the phase out.
Users who are still using old version can simply update to a newer version of the app.
However, few MitID users today use MitID on such old phone/tablet that it can no longer install the latest software updates for Android or iOS.
That means that they cannot update to a newer version of the MitID app.
From May 28, 2024, these users will not be able to use app on their old phone/tablet.
Key Aspects
To continue using MitID after May 28, the above-mentioned users must either order a free MitID code viewer or code reader or install MitID app on a newer phone/tablet.
iPhone user can install MitID app on iPhone 6S, all models upwards, which corresponds to operating system iOS 15 and onwards; re Android, app works on Android 9 and up.
In the coming week, affected users will all be informed directly via Digital Post/physical letter, so they have sufficient time to order and receive free code viewer/code reader.
DEN DIG recalled failure to update phone/tablet, MitID app exposes user to hacker attacks, fraud so from May 28 no longer be possible to use it on older phones/tablets.
Effectiveness
Old app version to be switched off on May 28, 2024.
