WV LEG passed HB 5690, creating a West Virginia task force on artificial intelligence.
Will enact new section WV LEG 5A-6-9, WV Task Force on Artificial Intelligence.
Task Force Composition
Provides definitions and authorizes task force within the office of the governor.
Task force consists of ex officio non-voting member from House of Delegates, one from Senate, chief information officer of Office of Technology, Superintended of Schools.
Other members include Chancellor of WV Higher Ed Policy Commission, Attorney General, department secretaries of Administration, Homeland Security, Health.
Each of the government officials may designate an alternative to him or herself.
Other members with relevant expertise from the public, appointed by governor.
Task Force Responsibilities
Defining AI, determining other state agencies to be involved, developing best practices, recommending legislation to protect individual rights, liberties, data.
Recommending model school policies, whether task force should oversee AI and make ongoing recommendations, assess use of AI in workforce and in state agencies.
Initial Organization
All appointments shall be made within 90 days of effective date of this legislation.
Will meet quarterly in person or online and report to governor and legislature by Jul. 1, 2025, and shall terminate on the later of the date of the report or Jul. 1, 2025.
