FIN GVT published consultation on proposed legislation to enact EU regulation on the transparency and targeting of political advertisingReg 2024/900 (see #162790).
Proposed Legislation
Main objective to implement Regulation (EU) 2024/900 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the transparency and targeting of political advertising.
Purpose of EU regulation to improve the transparency of political advertising, to create rules for the targeting of political online advertising, and to harmonise EU legislation.
Proposed domestic provisions include the right to information and inspection, the right to impose a penalty payment, and relevant amendments to supervisory legislation.
National Audit Office of Finland proposed as main supervisory authority to provide guidance and advice, with transfer of some powers from Data Protection Ombudsman.
Data Protection Ombudsman and Finnish Transport and Communications Agency would be other competent authorities on the cooperation and exchange of information.
Next Steps
Proposed changes to enter into force on Oct. 10, 2025, when the EU Regulation will be mainly applicable, with feedback on domestic proposals required by May. 9, 2025.
