On Aug. 7, IOM GVT confirmed shared parental, bereavement leave.
IOM GVT said new rights on shared parental leave and parental bereavement leave will be introduced Nov. 1, 2025, in final Employment (Amendment) Act 2024provisions.
Follows IOM GVT Mar. 2025, reported bill provides for rest breaks, see #247824.
Summary
Under parental bereavement leave parents will be entitled to take an additional two weeks’ off following the death of a child under the age of 18, including stillbirths.
Can be taken as a single two-week block or two separate one-week blocks in the first year after death; expectant parents suffering miscarriage will be entitled to one week.
Shared parental leave will enable parents to share up to 50 weeks' leave in the first 12 months of a baby's life; both maternity/paternity leave will still be available as options for new parents; similar rights will be implemented for adoptive parents at same time.
Shared parental leave and parental bereavement leave will also be accompanied by new allowances: parental bereavement allowance and shared parental allowance.
Where eligible, parental bereavement allowance will be paid for up to two weeks in the case of a child's death or stillbirth after 24 weeks of pregnancy or one week in the case of miscarriage before 24 weeks of pregnancy, with other eligibility criteria applying.
Next Steps
Legislation to be brought forward to Tynwald in coming months before implementation.
Further work on new neonatal care leave and carer’s leave rights is being progressed and will be brought forward to the Branches in 2025; the Department for Enterprise is further planning a host of secondary legislation for matters such as rest breaks.
