Bill was introduced into NZ PRL and passed the first reading stage on Sep. 4, 2024.
Overview of Bill
This bill makes amendments to the Gambling act 2003 to make permanent the temporary provision currently in section 4A that exempts class 3 gambling in the form of a lottery from the prohibition on remote interactive gambling in section 9.
This will allow class 3 gambling in the form of a lottery to be conducted remotely.
This change will allow operators to receive payments through phone or online banking.
Bill aims to ensure that funds from gambling benefit the community, allowing licensed class 3 operators to continue raising money for charitable/non-commercial purposes.
Next Steps
Bill will follow the required legislative process, and it is currently at first reading stage.
It will come into force on whichever is later: Nov. 1, 2024 or the day after royal assent.
Section 2 of the act provides that the 2024 act will come into force on the later of either Nov. 1, 2024, or on the day after Royal Assent as has been specified.
